Fortunately there's a well written tuturiol on how to see 7 installed from a flash drive at USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

Having a 16gb flash drive onhand overcame any size problem and saw the 7077 installer startup and run while actually being booted in the same 7077 build! Once the setup files were copied over to the test partition from the flash drive the system restarted and went the rest of the way through until complete.

The "Leak Test" partition I is where that installation ended up there for a quick test. That doesn't see 7 installed onto the flash drive but replaces an optical drive when a dvd drive isn't available to see Windows installed onto a hard drive since the usb flash is still considered a removable media device there.

Yes Night Hawk. Well Illustrated. And a great tutorial for installing windows from a removable media.
Its a given that Windows 7 can be installed from removable media eg Thumdrive, to a existing Hard Drive inside a desktop pc.
The instructions i posted were to install windows 7 onto an external usb hard drive...or SDHC Card.....on an eeepc.
Without changing any registry files on the usb drive it will fail to install.
Hope my post is usefull to some....I know it works as mine is running beautifully here.
If i knew how to post screenshots, i would
Regards.

The Windows installer will automatically prevent installation to any removable type drive or device sorry to say. When simply trying that on the external hard drive as well as the flash drive the 7 installer flagged them immediately with that message.

The installer for any version since 95, 98, ME, 2000 has always been geared for seeing that done from removable media onto a hard drive. Mounting an image on a virtual machine would be the only option that could be tried there.

Posting screenshots is easy! You simply go to one of the free online image sharing sites and select the file to be uploaded there like the jpg, png, or bmp within the size limits they allow and post a link for it. The better sites will see different links for seeing just a direct link, a clickable thumbnail post, or inserting the image like that was done there.

Well, if you follow what i did, you too will be running windows 7 from an external drive.
You are correct, the windows installer WILL NOT install to a usb device.
But, if the image is image-ex accross to it following baarods instructions....then the above steps in my post are followed.....it WILL INSTALL.
Well, its working here...will post a couple of screenies

That would have to be the usb flash drive since the 7077 x86 and leak test partitions here on actually on the external usb hard drive(moved inside the case however). What baarod was referring to there besides the commahds was the "Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows 7 Beta)" readily found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

When baarod mentioned the file being too large earlier I had to go direct to the source for the full thing. Being good sized it was probably too large for the file hosting he uses there. Some of the free hosting sites have some definite size limitations. I hope it works out well for you there.

Which file? WAIK is 1.4GB so I didn't want folks to have to download the whole things just to get imagex.exe

That would actually be the 1.3gb KB3AIK.iso not seeing anything with that name on it while being quite a bit more involved with the options for x86 and x64 including its own startup. One quick look at that with UtraISO reveals... "egads!"

Ya that might be a little overwhelming for any first time user!

SDHC card not recognized
We just bought an 8GB SDHC Transcend micro SD card from amazon. I did not realize there were probs. I put it directly into my tower in the card slot and nothing pops up. If I put my regular old 2GB micro SD in the slot, it immediately pops up, but not the SDHC card. Is there a fix for this?...
