Running a video as screensaver in Windows7

Running a video as screensaver in Windows7

Some of you may have seen my posting in the Vista forum on how to run a video as screensaver (http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/250126-run-video-screensaver-tutorial.html ). This method does not work in Windows7. There is, however, another method for Windows7 that accomplishes the same goal.

For that you have to go via Windows Live Photo Gallery. If you do not have it yet on your system, download it from Windows Live Essentials ( http://download.live.com/?wa=wsignin1.0 ).

    Then do the following steps:

    · Open Live Essentials Photo Gallery
    · Click on File
    · Click on > Screen Saver Settings (This will open the Screen Saver Settings)
    · Browse to your folder with the video and open it (OK)
    · In the Use this theme list box, select Album
    · Then do Save
    · Now run Preview and see whether it works

Remind you that the video format must be .wmv. If you have another format, convert it with Format factory ( http://www.formatoz.com/ )

wmv file running as screensaver freezes

It was great finding this thread on how to make a .wmv movie file play as a screensaver. It was working fine until about 2/3 of the way through when it locked up with the frame frozen on the screen. After waiting awhile longer, the screen went black except for a "filmstrip" icon in the center of the screen. Has anyone seen this problem, and know how to fix it? Thanks..

The closest I can think of is to get another computer. It does not work with some of the low end on-board video facilities. Your computer must be a few years old.

I have a EVGA Nvidia 660Ti. Not really a low-end card now is it. So, my question is, is this just a problem that has no work around and if you have certain models of video cards your just screwed?

With such a card it should work. But I have not tried that in a long time.

The "This computer can't play themes" issue is a common problem with Windows 7 because Windows Live hasn't actually been updated. So, the problem is that as crazy as this sounds, your computer is better than it expects and so it glitches. The most surefire way to fix it permanently is to manually set the screensaver to just use the proper settings without checking them every time. The computer may hang a second when the screensaver starts or stops, because it has to change your entire resolution ( I run at 1920x1080 but the screensaver themes has a max resolution of 1366x768) but it works!

So, to do this open up regedit.exe (and save a copy of your registry in case you make a mistake!) then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows Live \ Photo Gallery \ Slideshow

Right click and create a new key and call it "WinSATScore" then double-click your newly created WinSATScore entry select Decimal and make the score 300 or higher. Now it should work.

If you want to see the other less registry editing stuff to try first, or if you want screenshots to help guide you through it, here is a link to the best site I've found with screenshot exampled instructions.
