    Windows 7 Easy Transfer problem

Hi everyone this is my first post!

I have just upgraded to Windows 7 64bit from XP pro 32bit using Microsofts comprehensive guide but am now having problems retreiving my data via easy transfer

I currently have two hard drives c & d (c being my system drive and d for photo's music etc). Whilst transfering my data over to an external drive via easy transfer I had the bright idea of upgrading my d drive from a 120gb to 500gb capacity unit. After refitting this new drive it was relabelled j as one of my dvd drives had pinched d! So with a bit of juggling and renaming, d is once again my second hard drive.

When I now try to transfer my data back to Windows 7 the process hangs after a few seconds (at the same point every time) and my external drive light turns red (rather than blue when it is in use). It sits like this until I get a message asking me to check my usb connections and try again. Everything is connected fine so I can't work out what the problem is.

    Please can someone help me?

    Welcome, snowball!

I wonder if your USB drivers are giving you trouble. Try updating both your USB and chipset drivers.

Also, did any software come with the hard drive? If so, be sure to install it.

Can you access anything else on the drive?

    Thanks for the welcome,

All my other usb devices seem to be running fine and my external HDD had no disks, it was just plug and play. I can open it up ok and see everything thats stored on it with no problems either.

Can you access any other files on the drive except for the easy transfer file?

Try taking the hard drive to another machine. Does the Easy Transfer file work there?

Have just tried to copy the files from my Toshiba external hard drive (only 7 months old!) to my Fathers xp pro machine, but I keep getting the message "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". I have 3 backups from my xp setup and the easy transfer file from my windows 7 installation but this message appears each time I try to copy them!

    Please help.

Try running chkdsk on it. Don't take my word for it, but I wouldn't be surprised if your data is corrupted.

I suspect your right. An IT friend of mine is looking into this for me. I have given him my original second hard drive that I installed windows 7 onto by error the first time. Unfortunately this has been formatted, but he has the software to recover my data (hopefully). I am hoping that the windows.old file that was created will still be intact so I can retreive my photo's and movies.

I'll let you know how it goes.

    Cheers,

    Andy.
