    Free Win7 Upgrade wont install

I have an Acer 1410 Netbook with VIsta Home Premium (32 bit). It came with a free Win7 upgrade certificate. The install DVD(s) just arrived in the mail.

When I try to open the DVD in the external drive, the drive oens and I get a message "insert disk". When I insert the disk, it just sits there. Same is true when I try to explore the disks. I've also tried it on another laptop using the same external DVD drive.

I even tried it on another computer with an internal DVD. same problem. It won't let me explore the disk, and it won't let me open or autoplay. It kicks it out and tells me to insert a disk.

I tried to boot from the CD - even though the instructions are clear that I should just run the disk... It isn't a bootable DVD. Any ideas what is going on here?

THe upgrade is a set of 2 DVDs. One is supposed to be a "wizard" and the other is the actual Windows7 DVD. That makes me doubt that I just got a defective disk.

The Acer site is totally useless for support, so I am coming to you guys to see if I can get some help.

    ANy ideas???

We have two of the Acer Upgrade Kits here, also, and have helped quite a few others who are able to get the Windows 7 DVD in the kit to boot for a clean formatted install.

It is a white DVD, not the Green one with Drivers/Apps which we haven't needed for anything here since the WIn7 DVD has all of the drivers. But browse it to see.

Have you set your DVD driver first to boot in BIOS? Has it booted for other DVD's before? Boot from CD - How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD - Boot to CD

If you are sure you are using the Win7 DVD and can't get it to boot, the problem is likely your external DVD drive not being set to boot in BIOS. Try the key given on the first bootup screen for Boot Menu; look for the external by name.

If this fails, try extracting the DVD ISO using ImgBurn and writing to flash stick: USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

What happens when you put the 'Wizzard' DVD in?

Same exact behavior as when I try starting with the green Win7 disk. It ejects and tells me to insert the disk.

I'm looking around for another bootable DVD to see if I can get the netbook to boot from the DVD-ROM drive. I have t set that way in the BIOS, but the only disks I've tried to boot from are the two in this upgrade.

Another thing you can try is to extract the DVD files to desktop to run Setup. If it will run, choose Custom install. Your files will all be placed in a windows.old folder.
