windows 7 home 64bit
blue screen with flowers

When I try to turn the laptop on, it shows the following message:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

If windows files have been damaged…"

And then it gives me a 2 options:

1. Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
2. Start windows normally.

If I choose option one, it loads some files, and then a black screen appears with no cursor. After waiting for 20-40 minutes, it becomes a blue screen, with flowers, much like a background for a desktop. But there is no option to do anything.

If I choose option 2 (start windows normally) it shows the windows logo for 3 minutes, and then reboots.

I have tried to recover my computer using the discs as I can't start windows. I only get as far as putting the disc in and it gets stuck on a dark blue screen with the mouse showing. I've also tried the F10 option and after a few moments a dialog box appears saying that vaio recovery tools are being launched and it just sits there doing nothing, any help or advice would be appreciated.

Try tapping F8 repeatedly at bootup to see if a "Repair My Computer" choice exists on Advanced Boot Tools. If not, try Last Known Good Confg then Safe Mode. If so, run Startup Repair repeatedly until Win7 starts, then try System Restore and Memory Test.

If Sony provided a Win7 install DVD or you have access to one, try booting (not running) it to see if there is a Repair my Computer choice on one of the first menu's. If so, select that and run Startup Repair repeatedly from disk, Memory Test, System Restore.

If not, download and burn to CD a Win7 Repair CD to boot and run Startup Repair, System Restore, and Memory Test: System Repair Disc - Create

You can copy out your files this way: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Is your Sony still under 1 year warranty w/tech support?
