Unable to upgrade from vista to 7

    Hello-

I have been trying to upgrade from Vista to 7 and have been getting an error towards the end of installation when it is trying to transfer the temporary files (last step of installation) and it then states that it was unable to complete the installation and then tries to reload back to Vista, which it is unable to do and I am stuck back in the reloop to Vista. This seems to be a common problem, as I have read that many other people are having this problem on the Microsoft website, but there does not seem to be a solution that works. I have tried looking in the command prompt for the words "is too long" as they suggested, but I do not find this phrase anywhere. Has anyone found a solution that works that is easy to understand? Microsoft doesnt seem to be in any quick hurry to help the people who have spent their money to upgrade but are now at a stand still because they cannot get it to install. PS- I am REALLY trying to avoid doing a clean install and want that as my last possible option...

Are you going from 32 to 32 or 64 to 64 bit? That's the 1st question.

Be patient, I don't know any tricks myself, but someone here will. Sorry I could not be more helpful. I just wanted to clear up that first question. I have done several upgrades and never had any problem.

What type of PC do you have? I'm asking because you probably need to do a repair install of vista. I understand that you are trying to avoid a clean install, but either you do it now or will have to later.

Try doing a clean boot of Vista to run the Upgrade: type msconfig into Start Search box, rightclick Run as Admin, on Services tab check Hide All MS services, then uncheck all remaining services, Apply. Try Upgrade now.

Next try to locate these logs. The last entry should be a strong clue to what is blocking Upgrade:

    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\miglog.xml
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupapi\setupapi.app.log
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\PreGatherPnPList.log
    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\PostGatherPnPList.log

Remember that your last resort is also a much better install: Clean Install Windows 7
