    Serial keys

    Hi all,

I'm not sure if this has been answered before, so apologies if this post is redundant.
I'm planning a new pc build and just want to know if I can use a windows 7 32 bit serial number to install the 64 bit version. I was given W7 ultimate 32bit as a gift but want to run 64 bit to take advantage of more ram.

Also, what components do I need to ensure are 64 bit compatible? I'm looking at the intel i5-750, a gigabyte ga-p55m mobo, with a radeon 5850 graphics card.

    Thanks heaps!

    hello Codewana,

your configuration is OK for 64bit system.
32 serial number will not work for 64bit system.

Your key will work so long as the 32bit is not currently activated...

The so called 32 bit key will definitely work with 64 bit install media.

(Assuming the key is not already in use on another machine).

Unless you create an .iso able to install any Edition - you will need to have the 64 bit install media for the same Edition ( Premium , or Pro, etc. ) that the key is for.

Thanks to all repliers. Interestingly, the copy of widows 7 I have is already in .iso format. Does this mean it will be capable of installing both bit versions of windows?

No, the dvd you have is capable of installing any Edition (basic, premium, Pro, Ult ) but only the bit version that is on the .iso. It will be preconfigured to only install one Edition - that can be changed.

There are separate .iso's for 32 bit and 64 bit.

You will need to get the 64 bit .iso.

If that 64 bit .iso is preconfigured to install the Edition your key is for, you will be fine.

Otherwise , you will to tweak it so you can install any Edition.

I dont think so. My windows7 ultimate OEM editions activate key (32bit) is work for my x64 system. and the ultimate keys also work for home premium and professional.( I have a lot of OEM activate keys)

the reason an ultimate key works with other versions is because it has everything already. there is no need to limit it.

I bought the 32 and 64 bit retail upgrade versions of Win7 through the Microsoft Store, as downloads. I got them in .iso form.

There were separate .iso files for 32 and 64 bit. The 32 bit version was approx. 2.44GB, and the 64 was 3.15GB.

I have read mentions of installers that included both X86 and X64, but I suppose they'd be larger than either of the above.

A bit larger - still fits easily on a dvd . I just made one - it's pretty easy if you would like to have a go - See Here
