An invincible Windows 7 boot problem

I suppose you have tried running explorer.exe from the task manager?

This whole thing looks a lot like a virus I once had.....

Running explorer.exe did help a little, now my desktop looks like this:



Still I can't run the F:\setup.exe (same error messages as before) and the SFC /SCANNOW interrupts at the 6% like before.

Any more ideas?

If you put the Windows Install DVD in the drive, does it even attempt to auto run? If so will it allow an upgrade install?

Can you open Computer and click on the DVD icon to see the files and start an install from there? This is probably the same as using the F:\setup line, which you already tried.

If you can get to explorer in safe mode, can you do the same thing in normal? Maybe the
DVD would autorun there.

I suppose you cannot copy any files from the DVD to the Hard drive?

I was thinking one more thing. When you run the SFC, does it always stop at 6%? The reason I ask is could it be repairing only some files on each run..... How many files have to be repaired to go from 6% to 7%, I have no idea, or even if it works that way.

Boot the Win7 DVD, select Repair on second screen, see if it finds an installation to Repair and run Startup Repair up to three times with reboots to see if it helps.

If System File Checker will not repair the files, then your last resort before reinstall is to do a Repair Install.

When I was locked out of my desktop in the same way, I was able to run Repair Install from Task Manager>New Task run box. This is because I run as hidden Admin.

You need to be able to elevate to Admin from Command Line or Run box in order to complete this. I gave you one way earlier. There are many other results if you Google "run as Administrator from Command Line" which you can try until you exhaust all approaches.

Ok, time to face the facts..my W7 is broken and it can't be fixed. A clean install appears to be the only option.

But before formatting the entire HDD I'd like to try recovering some files from the partition which contained less important files like music etc. The partition table looks now like this:



So it's the unknown /dev/sda5. How should I proceed? Do I have to format it first to some filesystem and then try to run some file recover software or what?
