Upgrade to Win 7 Home Premium 64Bit from 32bit ?

    Hey again

A few months back I purchased Win 7 Home Premium 32bit from MS, I was given a student discount and I took it !

Anyway at that time I was given the opportunity to either purchase 32bit or 64bit version of the OS. Now I'm sort of kicking myself because I wish I would have purchased the 64bit edition rather than the 32bit.

    My laptop fully supports 64bit.

Anyway is there anyway where I can get an upgrade for free or for a low cost ?

You might check with your school and see if they would exchange it for you...

well isn't the CD key tapped into your computer specs and hard ware IDs...

I am sure that if you get your hands on a copy of 64 bit windows cd... pretty much someone who bought windows 7 from the store because it comes with both cds 32 and 64..

you didn't technially buy the cd, you bougt the cd key

but before formatting your computer... call up microsoft and make sure you can do that.. and let them know the situation. I really dont think they will make a big deal about it.

It is used to create the Product ID, which is used by MS for many things, like support eligibility among others..

Under the Win7 EULA, your activation key works with either 64 or 32 bit versions. You are entitled to change to either at any time.

MS is trying to make good on only one version being shipped to those who bought the student deal. Here is what you need: Microsoft Fixes Windows 7 Student Edition Upgrade Problems - Windows 7 student edition - Gizmodo

Why do you feel you must upgrade to 64 bit? If you add your hardware specs of your computer we may be able to give you an answer if you should or not.

I've run both of them. The 32bit version seems to be more friendly to 3rd party codecs/drivers/software. 32 bit seems to use less memory also. Unless you have 4GB+ of memory I'd stick with the 32 bit.
