This may sound silly but have you tried Windows Update? It does sound very much like an incompatability with 1 or more hardware devices, as it's not OS specific.
My last laptop kept shutting down after about 5 mins & i thought it was software related. It wasn't untill I started 'Disabling' devices 1 by 1 in Device Manager that I found the issue. Turns out the CPU was faulty so 'Disabling' it actually overcame the issue with no loss of performance.

Well, "all the os's run fine" to me means no problems... and one would have to assume that you are having this issue with all the OS's. So, if that IS the case, its not an OS dependant issue, it is most likely due to hardware fault. Due to the rarity of the explanation, for it to go xcross platform OS makes it more of a hardware issue. Whether it could be faulty anything like ram, hd, cpu, ethernet cable, ide/scsi/sata cable... Bad sectors/cluster on HD is one of my prime answers to this happening, or spin-up time gone bad and access to hd.
I also HAVE TO assume that this is happening after a truly fresh install with no other applications, drivers or updates installed on it after the OS install. This problem i have seen occur with the use of multiple usb devices, namely HDD's. Whether on a hub, or single. usually this is an IRQ issue and usually results in a complete lockup or a bsod in my experience.
Not that age matters alot of the times, since age is related to the temperatures it faces during its lifecycle, but how old is the motherboard?
You see where i keep going with this.... hardware hardware hardware. In no way, imo, are you going to see the same problem you are describing with different OS and it be an operational problem of the OS.
As far as assuming things, one has to when the original poster leaves things up in the air. You havent said how your multi structure OS is "configured" on the HD, or if you are using multiple HDDs or what or how the partitions, if any, were setup. Not too mention your dismal explanation of your system specs (Tho atleast you attempted to write that out, where others just put "win 7" or "OS 7" in the details.
Test that motherboard, and probably your ram (not familiar with your brand/manufacturer) and then your HDD(s).... or in reverse order. But again, this is not an OS problem it seems from your problem's description.

Another good way of troubleshooting things tho. But by diabling it, with sending info back to MS wont help them help you fix an issue with a disabled non working device (not a cpu tho lol). I had this happen with win7 on lappy, webcam built in wouldnt work, no real driver, vista driver didnt work either. I installed the logitech software for vista (that didnt work) and left it. A month later or so, i get on the lappy and clicked on the cam for the hell of it and by a MS miracle it finally fired up just fine. I had it sending info back to MS from install constantly, online. I sleep at nite thinking that did the trick

Digger I really appreciate your input and suggestions and I will relay it to my friend. I have on various occasions told him that this cannot be the OS, for it happens on all we tried. I have installed them from XP through to build 7057. Just one OS at a time though, not multi booting. And before I installed a different one I did a proper format of the hard drive first. So it was a clean istall every time. (Every time updating.) We are trying to figure out where the problem lies in th hardware, and he is at this moment swapping his hard drive, so we'll see.
My apologies for being vague at times, and my sincerest appreciation for your help!!

I know it sound absurd but it worked. It would work in safe mode which led me to believe it was a device issue. I even had to disable the CPU during a fresh install of Vista. I had to boot in safe mode & install & load up in safe mode when it first restarts. It stated it cannot continue in safe mode but by pressing ALT+F10 i could open the command console. After running (can't remember the file name) the management console i could open device manager & disable that way. Rebooted & finished the install. Weirdest thing i've experienced by far LOL

I have Gateway M-6850FX and i had same problem for about two week's. My hard seams to be freezing and i got not responding mesages. Install fresh copy of Windows 7 AND DONT INSTALL "ANY" GATEWAY FABRIC DRIVERS. sorry for my bad english.

a proper format does not always get rid of everything,ok my way is longer but it cuts out a lot of errors i had a similar problem with a hdd a while ago and someone suggested using dban first since using this little gem i have encountered 0 problems when installing and the actual install of the os seems to run quicker and smoother.
