Build 7068 won't Install

    can't install windows 7


    I am using VISTA ultimate on my desktop (AMD athlon 64 3600+; 2gig RAM; ASUS m2n68-VM mb) and I hv 3 hdds (2 sata+1 pata). I hv tried all the options, but I am still unable to upgrade to WIN7. I hv tried build 7048, 7057 & 7068 (both 32 bit & 64 bit). I hv tried upgrade as well as clean install. When I opt for the upgrade, the setup starts copying/expanding setup files and after a pretty long time and a couple of restarts, I get the message "the windows upgrade was not successful. Restoring the previous version of windows".
    On the other hand, when I do a clean install (on a blank formatted partition), the setup starts and again after a pretty long period, the machine restarts and I get the message "the windows was not shutdown properly" / please insert the setup disk and press "repair". I tried all the possible solutions but the result was still the same.
    I hv also updated the BIOS.
    Can somebody please help?

    Step 2, When 7 restarts for the first time, start in safe mode. A dialog box should state that windows cannot continue in safe mode 'ok' to restart. Leave that as it is.
    Step 3, press (ALT+F10 or SHIFT+F10) to open the command prompt and direct youself to x:\windows\system32 then type CompMgmtLauncher (it takes a few seconds to load) you can then access device manager from this console.
    Step 4, Select the display adaptor & choose to disable it. Close command window and click ok on the dialog box. Windows will use a standard VGA driver when it restarts.
    Once installation has finished & you actually have a screen up & running you should be able to install your original drivers.
    This works in Vista but as 7 uses the Vista kernel it should work here too.

    YES! YES! YES!

    This worked perfectly! I had to do it a couple of times. First time I actually nodded off before I could hit safe mode after the initial restart .. lol!

    The second time was the charm! Followed the instructions and by disabling the video card/driver allowed the install to continue to a successful completion.

    Shift F10 was the right combination and be careful to follow the end of instruction #2. Leave the dialog box alone UNTIL you have completed the disabling step in the Device Manager window.

    THEN hit OK in the dialog box once your finished.

    I'm now running Build 7068 x64. Wow I didn't think I would ever get there!

    So props to Orbital Shark for a clever and simple solution.

    This might seem crazy, but it seems that because windows7 has such a large HAL, one could probably use the image from another computer, and install the image on another computer of different hardware. At a minimum a minor driver upgrade may be needed.
