    Authentication Help

EDIT: I meant Activation, not authentication!

I bought the student upgrade version of 7 a while back without realizing that it was simply an upgrade meant to be applied to a computer with an earlier version of Windows already installed. I didn't notice this until I went to use the installation disc sent to me to install it on my new desktop I built. When I went to authenticate it using the product ID given to me upon purchase, it failed and said something along the lines of, "This key doesn't work with this kind of install". I skipped the step and went along and installed without authenticating, and 7 runs great. But...

Multiple times each day I get reminders to authenticate my software, and now that it's been a long time it's sort of getting annoying. I also can't change my wallpaper (which I'm assuming has to do something with this issue); if I do, it goes to a plain black wallpaper in a few minutes. Does anyone have any idea how I can authenticate my copy of 7 with my upgrade product ID, even though I did a clean install? Any help would be appreciated!
