Boot the Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD, click through to Startup Repair to run up to 3 separate times with reboots. It will repair the MBR.

Post back a screenshot of your full Disk Management drive map, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu, attach file using paper clip in Reply Box. We'll give you the steps to delete and recover the old OS space into Win7.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I'm not quite sure what happened but in my impatience I tried a 'repair installation' and everything went totally pear shaped - My netbook was running so painfully slow that I decided to reinstall Win7 to make everything minty fresh again. I reformatted the old XP partition and installed Win7, leaving the old installation for me to pick its bones for files, settings etc later.

Strangely, the old loading bar is still there - just a few seconds now (and Win7 boots fine) but the damn thing just will not die!

I tried the repair CD iso (from a bootable usb drive) but I've obviously angered the Win7 gods because that refuses to recognize my installation, giving one menu option of
'Windows Setup [EMS Enabled]'

which when selected returns an error of
'The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt'

I'm off for a lie down in a darkened room now

Unplug one HD and clean install Win7 to other HD. Clean it good before install by booting Win7 DVD Repair console, opening Command Prompt to type:

SELECT DISK # (Win7 HD, plugged in alone)

Now boot the Win7 installer, select Custom Install>Create new partition(s) as you wish, format then install Win7 to first partition.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Excellent advice there Greg ..... if I was installing to my workstation - this is a netbook.

No worries now anyway, it was fun while it lasted (NOT) and I am now giving the Office 2010 Beta a try

MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

I realize that it is after the fact now, but by hitting Shift-
F10 at that first screen (actually at any time) when doing a Win 7 install, you will get to a command prompt where you can run Diskpart. Since your are running a DiskPart that's in ram, you can partition without overwriting the DiskPart program you would be running.

You can also put WinPE on a USB stick-I believe there is a tutorial from Brink for doing that- or if you are rolling your own WinPE on a UFD (USB Flash Drive) using WAIK then it's a piece of cake to substitiute the WinRe.Wim for the WinPe.wim and produce you own RecoveryDisk on a USB.

I also have a netbook and I put WinRe.Wim onto a USB using WAIK procedure so that in case of a disaster which made my netbook unbootable, then I'd be able to boot from the USB and repair the MBR, bootrecord, BCD or whatever got clobbered (example-installing Ubuntu and then removing Ubuntu).
