    The backup of all of your files and being prepared for a clean install of everything from scratch is what you would end up with. You can still use the Windows Easy Transfer but will need fresh installs most likely of all programs since you end up reformatting the C primary.

    Am using the RTM here to unlock all versions.

    If you have a Home Premium disk I don't think you still the same options to select the Pro edition for example and still use the same key on the retail disk. The Ultimate edition has all features except what is seen with the Enterprise edition containing all of the files the others use.

    Now it will depend on if there are two separate keys to see HP on the laptop with the Ultimate on the other Toshiba.

    Im going to backup all my data first using my usual Norton Ghost, that was I can restore it to the EXACT way it was before i started any of this, which i already did before wiping the drive.

    But Can I just restore that quickly, and do that upgrade trick to Windows 7 HP. Im really thinking of a clean install, unless there is a way to get all my programs back easily, as I have a lot of customizations in a bunch of the programs folders. I do use TuneUp Utilities, which their uninstall wizard unisntalls EVERYTHING if you ask it to (reg entries, customizations, empty program folder, and appdata folder). If I do the upgrade install, and then uninstall any programs I wanted, will it still work as if i did a clean install, then installed all my current programs?

    And my final question before i try it out and mark as solved...

    Since I will be downgrading, Will Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode carry over to HP and still be usable???!!!?!?!?!! Same with the Language Packs ??!?!?!?!!!?

    Once you downgrade to the HP edition you will automatically lose the present version of the XP Mode. MS just released a new MED-V download that doesn't require virtualization support with the hardwares to consider. The Pro, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions see the XP Mode as an option there however.

    With Ghost or any other drive imaging program even the system image option in 7 you would still see Ultimate restored since you are presently running it! Once you nuke the C primary to change editions that will be a totally new Windows where you can however restore some things with the Windows Easy Transfer tool.

    I know that you can transfer ur user info with WET. But can I transfer peograms?

    Programs must be reinstalled except in an in-place Upgrade. This is because they write to the Registry during install, so cannot be simply copied over.

    If you were simply replacing a drive with one identical you could restore a system image where everything will still be found intact. But when changing editions as a replacement not upgrade everything needs a brand new installation. This is why the Windows Easy Transfer tool can play a role in transferring files and setting onto the clean install once on.

    Fortunately 7 goes on much faster then most previous versions going back to the 9X days! The fresh install of all your programs will be the time consuming part of this. Use the WET tool however ahead of time as part of your backup process.

    Ok i installed, and activated. but it seems a lot slower than before. any way to speed that up?

    And can i just restore shell32.dll (top detail pane) and a few other files right to HP without any harm?

    Some have gone further in reducing the time it takes Windows to shutdown or restart but the 1000 count in the registry is quite adequate for allowing all programs to close out fully before that happens. The default for XP and Vista was 20,000 or 20 seconds while 7's is 12,000! The other guide is an overall look at how to boost your overall performance system wide.

    Its not slower to shutdown, just to start up, and log on.

    And most of the optimization thing, i have already done, except the defragging, which setup does when you upgrade install.
