I'm upgrading my computer from a windows xp professional to a windows 7 professional OEM 64-bit and I'm on the part that says "completing installation..." when I got to this part my keyboard and mouse was unresponsive, as in I couldn't move the cursor, is this normal? I don't think the process froze because the elipsees (...) are still going. Also an additional question, how long is the completing installation part? It's taking forever.
It's been 7 hours on this part, I thought the expanding part took long this completing installation is the longest by far, I'm gonna leave it over night and hopefully it'll finish. If it doesn't I'm gonna have to return it and just get XP professional 64 bit.
If you were installing onto a formatted partition, the install should take about a half hour. I don't know how much longer it would take if you were creating a windows.old folder, but I assume that it wouldn't be much longer.
As you can't do an upgrade-in-place from XP to Win7, or from any 32 bit OS to a 64 bit one, I'd suggest the reformat anyway.

Okay I'm gonna do a clean install and format the partition, a question though, I have two partitions and I just deleted one cause I don't like it separte and I kept the original system one. But when I deleted it it didn't fuse with the other as I expected, it is just name unallocated space. So Is it still a separate partition?
Also because I can't use my computer ATM, it's hard to fillout the specs. I will however be forced to if this 3rd time doesn't work.

Well that isn't my problem it was just a side-question because I have the hard drive into 2 partitions and it sometimes gets frustrating. But one problem at a time I suppose, and yes I have checked that. It actually was the source that helped me format the first partiton and delete the second (that's where the side-question came from). Anyways not to get people confused and off point, if I format the system partition and clean install windows 7 onto that would that possibly fix the problem? As bobkn mentioned the problem could stem from trying to put a 64-bit OS onto a partition that has a 32-bit OS so he thinks my formatting the partition and then trying to install it would fix the problem. Is he correct at that assesment?
If you have backed-up everything you want from the XP 32 bit to somewhere else other than that HD, then yes a complete format & clean install would be the way to go as bobkn said.

When you delete a partition, the space is not automatically added to any other partitions (even if you have only one left).
I don't recall whether the Win7 partitioning tool is capable of nondestructively expanding a partition to include unallocated space. In the past, I've used a third party utility for the purpose, Partition Magic, but I'm not sure that it fully supports the latest version of NTFS. I believe that it does not.
The no-brain way to do it is to delete all partitions, and create a new one that uses all the space on the drive. You'd need a spare drive to save all the files you wish to preserve.
