    Install Windows 7 on both systems?

    I own 2 lap tops one has XP now and one has Vista. I woud like to put Windows 7 on both necessitating an update for the Vista and a complete version for the XP. Can I buy a complete version of Windows7 Professional and install it on both machines?

    Nope. One per system. You will need two different keys.

    You can install from the same media, but one will have to be activated by purchasing a new key

    Actually, you can upgrade from Windows XP as well as Vista...so you don't need a full version for either...an upgrade version for both would suffice.

    He must have gone to Staples, the one by me is telling people they need the $200 version if they have XP and the $120 if they have Vista, my mom didn't fall for it though....

    Thinking about the upgrades, it might have to do with versioning as well;

    If you upgrade something like Windows XP Professional, you need the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade which of course costs more than the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade.

    Sorry, I wasn't clear, Staples was trying to sell my mom the $200 full version of 7 HP "because you can't upgrade from XP to 7". Got to love salesmen that know nothing about PCs yet are selling PCs and the software for them.

    My mom knew better, the PC we were putting it on was SUPPOSED to have Vista but my sister didn't have the discs handy so her BF put XP on it. I used the "upgrade" disc for 7 and did a clean install...

    Good work Mlevy! :)

    As pparks1 said as well, you would have to look at the versions for both the XP laptop and the Vista laptop. if one is Home Premium and the other is Pro, then you would need to get the corresponding software.

    Also determine if you are doing 32x or 64x. If either laptop is newer and has 4g of ram then you should get 64x for it. If it has less, the general consensus on this forum is to use 32x

    Also: you can download an upgrade advisor to each PC to see what you need to do for each and if the systems are going to be compatible. Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

    Thorsen, I can attest that BOTH 32-bit and 64-bit are included in the package, even the upgrade. The OEM version only includes one version, you need to choose when purchasing. Also, there's more than the memory that determines 32-bit or 64-bit, the CPU has to be 64-bit as well. You could have a 32-bit CPU with 4 GB of memory and still only be able to run the 32-bit OS, though I suppose most newer CPUs are 64-bit...

    Thanks for info mlevy, i had seen this, but forgot all about it. All versions are on the Disc right, you just need the right key and edit a .cfg file or something to use the other versions.

    The point I was making for using 64x with 4g of ram is that 32x wont use more than ~3.25g of RAM due to the system allocating RAM for hardware addressing. 64x allows all 4G of ram to be used.

    The upgrade Advisor should inform you of what CPU you have and if it is 64x compatible. Good info!
