    Hi zebdog

As long as you have separate licenses for the Operating issues, I do not think that you would have any issues.
The showstopper is, if the Vista medium was an OEM disk and you are trying to transfer it to a newer box.
Based on what you have stated, I think that you would have no issues reinstalling Vista, on the old box and on which it was installed previously, and transferring 7, on to the new box, provided the 7 media is a retail box.
If both the disks are retail, you are good to go.

    Hope this helps and regards

You will be fine with what you are proposing then.
If you do have any issues with reactivating windows 7 on the new box, some users on this forum have recommended that you follow the phone activation method and that, despite what some users have shared, it is a pretty painless process.

Hope this helps and please post your final results when able

    Take care and regards

Edit: Do not forget to back up your essential data (photos, music, documents etc.) on both boxes before re-installation.

As Lomai says, you can indeed resintall Vista on your machine which has the Vista license, using either the back-up disk or a clean-copy installer of your version - both the OEM and retail are the same installer starting with Vista.

Sometimes you will be referred to make the robocall to MS to activate using the Product Key off of your COA sticker in order to sort the specific key for your machine from the batch key on the sticker.

When you migrate your WIn7 retail copy, it requires a robocall to reset the hardware signature assigned to that key.
