You guys seem to have different experience than myself. i used Vista since day1 (Febr. 1, 2007) and Win7 since Beta. I never had a single BSOD and there was never anything that I wanted to do that could not get done. Granted, sometimes with workarounds, but that does not bother me.
Vista lasted about 15 minutes in one of my test machines. Install... get to desktop, try to browse around various folders to get the lay of the land... Got asked if I really want to do that about 40 times and formatted the hard disk.

Win7 is better... it lasted a month but during that time all I did --and I do mean ALL, morning to night, every day-- was fight with it.

Is that a whole month of testing? Imagine that I've only been using it for a 16 months and not a single problem worth mentioning on 6 completely different machines. No offence but, I think maybe your experiance level with Windows 7 is the real problem here tater.

You should have been here for the earlier builds, you would actually have something to complain about then because there were some legitimate bugs at that time. Of course those were expected on the beta builds.

Looking at the stats on your machine I'd say you have a bit of catching up to do hardware wise because your system is a bit of a relic and seems to be more inline with XP hardware specs rather than Windows 7.

In any event I hope you figure out why you seem to having so many problems.

I have no doubt that's at least some part of it... But c'mon... I've got close to 30 years in the industry, what of the person who's getting their first computer and runs into this stuff?

Yes, well... I did figure it out and I dumped it ... If that bothers you... well, it's just not my problem.

CommonTater, I am really puzzled by all the problems you seem to have had with Windows7. I am running two Windoes7 and four Vista and never had any problems - at least none I could not easily fix. But I am running pretty much Vanilla because every time I tried my luck with "tweaks", I fell on my nose. I only make minor little changes when I really understand what it is going to do. And then I always make an image before I modify anything so that I can easily set back.
Did you really go back to XP? If yes, I wonder how long you can operate with XP without loosing out on many of the new functions and hardware support (e.g. SSD Trim). Is there anything where we can help you get on an easy road with Win7?

Yes I did... Two weeks ago I put the HTPC back on XP and this weekend I've put my wife's and my machines both back to XP... We had a family meeting to talk about it (and have a really good dinner together, too) and the decision was that if I couldn't get it straitened out by last weekend I was to revert the machines. I stretched it an extra week on the threat that "If it misbehaves again you'll do it right there and then" and I'm not about to defy the wishes of my entire family...

If you doubt me, ask the mods to check my browser signatures...

I rather doubt it. At least not with Win7 in it's current state... Maybe at the SP2 level... But Build 7600 just ain't doing it for me.

Fair enough - and I believe you. Canada is a free country and everybody can make his/her own choices. I am just a little puzzled that someone as experienced as you are could not make it work.

whs, I don't think it's the experience, it's the "I had it" factor...

I guess. I never encounter any problems, just challenges. That keeps me happy.

zzz2496, I think you nailed it. And it wasn't just the I've had it" factor for Common Tater; it was also the pressure and "I've had it from his whole family.

I hope he will at least keep Win 7 on one of his machines and work with it. I know the problems can be overcome.

I had networking problems, too; but only two computers were involved. Chev and others here guided me until I was up and running. I will have to agree with Common Tater on one thing; everyone I know personally who has tried to network with mixed OS's has had problems with the Win 7 machine. This is one aspect of Win 7 that MS did not get right. It is needlessly complicated and very user unfriendly.

MS wants you to do what I did. The wife and I wanted to share our printers but instead of tearing my hair out I got the wife a win7 laptop and shipped her Vista laptop to her mother. That was an easy and pragmatic solution.
