xp to windows 7

Hi Tews,
and thank you for your reply :) I'm happy to know that I could run windows 7 without a major hardware upgrade. Saves alot of money when I just have to expand the RAM.
All of your replies have been alot of help and I'd like to thank you all very much. I will be upgrading the ram to add on at least another 2gb DDR2 in the 2nd slot.
Its good to know that the existing 'windows' i have wouldnt cause any kind of problem with the update of windows 7 too.

Be sure to let us know how it goes....

I've heard that the upgrade version of windows 7 actually checks to see if the currently installed OS is activated and validated. If thats true and your version of XP is pirated I would probably avoid buying an upgrade version. You can't upgrade from XP to 7 anyway. Well you can and you can't. You have to do a custom install which is pretty much a clean install. All your stuff ends up in a windows.old folder so you end up re-installing all your programs anyway. There is lots of info and tutorials on this forum so if you poke around a bit you can get an idea of how you want to go when you make the move.
I'm running 7 on an Athlon XP +3200 with 2 gigs of DDR2 and a GEFORCE FX5500, Aero works and its quit peppy for an old PC. :)

Hey alphanumeric,
Thanks for the advise. I read about it that windows 7 does a clean installation and that i shouldnt use the upgrade version but do a full installation. I'll get the full copy just to be sure and go on the safe side. Yeah i also saw the amount of posts here and members online which is why i became a member here.
At least you wouldnt have to wait a week for your reply and so far from all the help i've been getting, everyone is pretty nice
So if yours works on 2gb DDR2, mine should too Thanks n yes Tews I'll post it when I get around to the 'upgrade' :)

@ windo7,
That sounds like you have so very good basics for upgrading as slow or fast as you want to go in the process depending on your budget. So I would probably increase the ram memory first. And see how it flys with that
EDIt: I ran win7 betas (x64bit) on 2gb ram for 6 to 9 months with NO problems. But I don't do any intensive gaming !

You can certainly use an Upgrade version if you have XP on hand, even if you wipe the HD first to get the cleanest possible install: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version
Otherwise Win7 installer will scan the HD at bootup to see XP and allow Upgrade version key.

Hi guys.
Well I dont do any gaming at all Doc Brown :) Those days are over haha So I'm guessing the 2gb of RAM that I bought on ebay today would be good enough to cut it. Yeah I'll upgrade the RAM first and then maybe the processor. Even on ebay its hard to get socket AM2 processors that are new. The most are used and i dont really trust that, with the overclocking and all. However I did read somewhere that socket AM2+ and AM3 processors are downward compatible for older motherboards. But i would want to be certain that they are before I buy them for my mobo :)
Greg Rocker do you mean I could still install using the upgrade version even if i have a possibly pirated xp? Because the link in your message says this:
If you do not have a valid qualifying previous version of Windows, then you are violating the terms of Microsoft's Windows 7 End User License Agreement and could get your product key number invalidated by Microsoft. Plus, it is considered illegal.

Well I'd find out for sure if XP is pirated because you'll save a lot of money buying an Upgrade version.
If you download any MS program (like Defender) it will run Genuine Advantage check, which should be sufficient to verify XP and comply with the EULA, which is voluntary.

I'm pretty sure it is Gregrocker because of the way i was cautioned not to do some stuff and because he built this himself. Its alright though, this time I'll go the distance and get the Windows 7 full n legitimate version :) Unlike vista this one seems to have a good reputation :) Though I think vista was like windows millenium edition. Pretty soon nobody would remember it or have it on their coms.
Doc Brown thats a cool site but before I buy, i'll have to check if i've to pay import duty and sales tax on that over here :) But i'll keep that site though.
