If you look in the RC installation files, under Sources>cversion.ini

you will see it checks the Minimum version number for an upgrade is 7077



You can change MinClient to a version number below the number of the Host version you want to run the upgrade install on - you should be able to do an upgrade install then.

Presumably it does not have an error message for that - so you get a different error message.

Don't do this.. By god, have you read all the problems with upgrading? MS won't even support an upgrade.

I am not recommending an upgrade.

The OP is obviously very experienced.

I am merely pointing out there is a cversion file which says Hostbuild, MinClient - pretty obvious that is why it is not working for him.

He is smart enough to have made a complete image of the Host partition before attempting an upgrade.

It would be a wise idea to delete that upgrade jpg and information from your HD. If MS wanted you to do an upgrade, they would have left it upgradable.

If the OP still wishes to see his files go up in smoke (possibly) or has a complete day to waste. Fine.

This is such an incredibly bad idea that it takes the 1st on the list of bad ideas. Even ahead of murder and robbery.

Okay, I found out what the problem was.... I used EASEUS Partition Master Unlimited 3.0 to get back some space that had been marked for a "Original Manufacturer Recovery Partition"..... Windows 7's installer for 32-bit or 64-bit does NOT like that program in the slightest yet.

If you have used it on your computer, Windows 7 will throw up that message saying that 'you do not have enough disk space available' when you start the setup in Windows itself.

HOWEVER, if you boot the Windows 7 install disk itself and say "Upgrade" or "Custom" install..... it will gladly fix the problems and install, no worries.

I found this out when I was 'Custom installing' my computer to go from 32-bit Windows 7 to 64-bit Windows 7, and while looking for suggestions on how to do this, ran into a report on Microsoft's Windows 7 forums saying that this was a confirmed and known problem, with no fix as of yet.

I am curious how the upgrade has worked out. Have you experienced any hardware or driver problems since the upgrade? Any common applications that would not run? I have the same PC and am planning to upgrade over the holidays.

RC 7100 was still a buggy beta with a ton of monitoring software.

A Win7 developer team member has a popular post pinned on Technet Install forum practically begging users not to attempt upgrading it to release code.

Haven't heard yet of anyone wanting to use it to upgrade from Vista, but i would not expect it to succeed with such an upgrade that is inferior to begin with.

How is performance?
