Windows 7 7100 Went Wrong

I recently upgrades to the Windows 7 7100 over my existing Vista OS. I thought it was more stable that the betas. Everything went well until i tried to access my files. Nothing would open. All files are on my pc because i can access through media player i just cant get to the control panel, my documents, computer or anything else directly. Could someone please help me with this problem?

Hi liltun18 and welcome,

I'm going to tell you what most everyone else will probably say...do a clean install of 7100. Upgrading doesn't always work, and you end up with things broken.

My sentiments exactly. Upgrading from anything prior to 7077 is not advisable and not recommended. Make backups of your important and valued data prior to experimenting with any beta or evaluation OS. Do a "clean install" every time.

I backed up some of my files but i still have others on my system. How will I be able to backup the large files when i dont really have a lot of external space to save it to? Is there a way to save my files to a separate area of my hard drive?

I agree with the clean install, however Microsoft did ask users to upgrade from vista to RC so they could collect more feedback on the upgrade.

My sentiments exactly, which leads me to believe there will actually be a 'send feedack' option with the public release of the RC.

As for saving your files, if you have around 15GB free space you can install Windows7 over your existing installation without formatting. This will move the entire disk structure (everything in C:\ or whatever drive you install on) to the windows.old directory.

Once installed you can access your media through the users directory within windows.old to move the files to the location you specify (normally the newly created user files list). You can then delete the windows.old directory, freeing up your HD space.

NOTE: You will lose program information, this is mainly just so you can keep your media files (Documents/Music/Videos etc).

Hope this helps..

Guys, STOP HARPING ON THE UPGRADE INSTALLS! That is not likely to be the source of his problems, considering that I have upgraded from the Beta to Build 7000 to Build 7033 to build 7053 to 7077 to now, 7100 on x86 without a problem (x64 just won't install over a x64 Vista build period).

Since I've now done that on 10 computers..... if he is having problems it is NOT because of the upgrade. Let me put it bluntly: IT IS OVERWRITING 99.99% OF THE FILES IT IS UPDATING!
When an upgrade is doing that..... there is no reason for it to be giving people problems, and it is mostly likely not the upgrade that is giving him the problems.

The things I would suggest to him: try going to the C:\Users\*your name*/My Documents directory manually. If your files are there...... then the location things in Documents has gotten f'ed up somehow, so see which locations are being listed in Documents. If it doesn't have C:\Users\*your username*\My Documents (Music, Pictures, Video) listed.... add it to the locations thing.

I personally had this problem when somehow the locations for Pictures in the Libraries thing I got messed up..... I though I had lost all my 30 GB's of pictures... no, it was just that the locations for Pictures had gotten messed up and My Pictures wasn't listed anymore.

Thought this looked like a file/folder security issue.

the problem isnt that the location is messed up. that is perfectly fine. the problem is if i attempt to click on documents, music, photos, control panel, etc nothing happens. if i try to save something i can see my files are where they are supposed to be i just can not access them directly.
