    Upgrade from XP to 7

If I wanted to upgraded a PC from XP to 7 and keep all my files, could I just use a retail Vista DVD I have, to do an in place upgrade, then without activating it, upgrade to 7?

    Hello Michael,

Sorry, but you cannot do a inplace upgrade from XP to Windows 7.

You could upgrade from XP to Vista, then Vista to Windows 7. However, you would be asking for a lot of unknown issues and problems that would most likely hit you from doing that.

I would recommend doing a custom install instead. This way it places all of the files from XP into the C:\Windows.old folder in your new clean install of Windows 7. After the Windows 7 installation is complete, you can copy any files you want back from the C:\Windows.old folder into Windows 7. You will still have to reinstall all drivers and programs though.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

I do not blame you, but doing it that way will usually end up being more of a problem than just biting the bullet and doing a clean install. I hope it goes smoothly for you.
