Windows 7: Upgrade left first OS in the background

Jonny, you are certainly welcome here. Just want you to know that you'll get a more balanced view if you also tap the Ubuntu forums, as many issues such as Disk Mgmt not seeing Ubuntu contents are not known to Win7 installers. Normally you can get answers from our Ubuntu users here, but they seem to be away this weekend.

I'd browse the contents of your Win7 partition to see if any XP files are still on it. When you install Win7 from another OS, it will put all of the files from your old installation into a windows.old file which can be deleted after making sure you have all your files safely moved over.

Is there something else that makes you think you still have XP on the Win7 HD? True it isn't as clean of an install as when you boot the installer to use the Custom>Drive Tools to delete, recreate then format the partition, but it would be unusual for Win7 not to fully overwrite XP.

Windows 7 32bit + Ubuntu (Dual Boot on both platforms)

Thanks They are all prolly playing about with the newest Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 :P
Yeah, I had a windows.old file, I deleted it recently (I upgraded in November). But its only since I installed Ubuntu that I noticed one of the OSs I could boot was 'Windows 2000, ME, XP' and since I only had XP before I assumed it was that.

I think the reason the actual contents aren't shown is that it is ext4 a new partition design that has only been in effect in Ubuntu since Karmic, so only a year old. I didn't get W7 or even XP until only 3 months ago. I already was using ext4 partitions so I thought when I looked at disk management and saw no description of actual data I thought it was normal.

You are correct about gparted and resizing W7 for sure, I always advise people to use the virtual disk management in W7, that is actually a pretty cool design that you can resize the partition your actually using, whoa thats really cool. I do use gparted to make a ntfs partition to install into with W7 so that I have a preset size, I am just used to using it. Doesn't work for XP though. I like the others like part magic and others I use as well, I would have never known about them had I not checked out this site.
