Windows 7 RC 7100 slow install

I downloaded Windows 7 RC x64 when it first hit Usenet/torrents. I downloaded it form Usenet, and the MD5 and SHA1 match those of the version from MSDN/Technet. It installed fine on my previous system (Asus A8N-E, 2 GB OCZ DDR400, AMD X2 4400+ Toledo core, socket 939).

I upgraded the motherboard, processor, and ram (Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P, Phenom II X4 955, 4 GB OCZ PC3 10666). I flashed to the latest bios and proceeded to install Windows with the same DVD mentioned earlier.

First weird thing: when it first starts to load off the DVD and there's the white progress bar and black background, the progress bar went to 100% real fast and then started over again and went slowly.

Once past that, it goes to starting Windows where you have the wallpaper with the little bird and other graphics. Well, that's all I got, that and a working mouse pointer. I went to another computer to start looking for answers on the Web. I then hear the DVD spin up and back down, but still nothing.

After a good 5 minutes, I look over and it's at the point where you select your country, keyboard layout, etc. I click next and it's back to waiting . . . Things got faster once I got past the "expanding files." Configuring settings, etc., went at about normal speed.

I have Windows loaded now and it's running fine. In case I have to install again, I went ahead and burned another copy at slow speed (4x), although I don't think it's the DVD.

I lost track of time while I was searching the Web and cleaning up the boxes and packaging leftover after the install. But when it loaded the screen with the blue background and the bird and graphics, it sat there with just a mouse pointer for at least 5 minutes. I never had that happen on the old system.

The other part that took an unusually long time was when it was expanding files. It sat there for at least 5 minutes before the percentage indicator started to progress. Other than that the install seemed normal.

If I have to install again before RTM, I'll definitely time it.

No, no USB drives. One SATA HD drive and a PATA DVD drive. I did use a wireless keyboard and mouse both with USB dongles.

I downloaded the official Windows 7 RC x64 from Microsoft and decided to do a clean install. Here's how it went:

2:31: Begin
2:33: Setup desktop with just the blue background and mouse cursor. No HD or DVD activity.
2:35: DVD spins up but no DVD activity light. No HD activity light.
2:36: Chose language, etc., screen. Next, "Setup is starting." Just the desktop and spinning cursor. No HD or DVD activity.
2:41: Select drive to install.
2:42: Copying Windows files.
2:44: Expanding Windows files.
2:46: Expanding begins with progress indicator.
2:52: Installing features/updates, reboot.
2:53: Completing installation.
2:56: Reboot.
2:59: Complete.

Elapsed time 28 minutes.

I installed windows 7 7100 yesterday, and it just installed fine, and works fine too.

Been reading lots of stuff on the web about this today.

First of all, I've had the legit version of Win 7 32bit Beta running on my machine since it came out. Perfect and stable.

Downloaded x64 bit for my machine yesterday, burned iso to a dvd at the slowest possible speed. Formatted my drive, deleted the partition, and formatted again.

Tried to install Win 7 x64 and after a LONG time, it gets to "Expanding Files" and the computer reboots at various % levels. Reboots out of the blue, totally.

Have tried repeating all the steps, making no difference.

My Specs are a brand new computer:

• Gigabyte GA-EX58-DS4 Motherboard
• Intel Core i7 920 CPU
• 9GB Corsair Ram, with correct XMP Profile set in Bios, so ram runs at native 1600MHz
• **Neither of above have been overclocked, I never bother with that**
• 500GB hard drive
• Gigabyte GeForce GTX 260 Graphics Card

Even trashed it all again and gave the install of Win 7 Beta a go again, and that worked perfectly. So why won't the x64 version install.

Some people on forums have recommended to download the iso again... but other than that I'm stumped.
