Windows 7: windows 7 and windows xp in a dual boot ?

If you are able to get to the screen where you create and format a partition with installer, then it is unlikely a missing SATA contoller driver as often happens with XP on newer machines.

Check the CD to make sure it is clean and unscratched. If necessary, wash it using a soft wet cloth with outward motions, then dry with another soft dry cloth. Can you borrow or download another XP installer for your version to try the install?

This issue usually happens on IDE drives. Check the jumper on the back of the HD to make sure it is set to Master, and any other drive attached to the ribbon cable is set to Slave. Then make sure they register correctly in BIOS.

Try also resetting the CMOS in BIOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Test your memory with memtest86 cd test for 6 passes, then test your HD with maker's full diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Boot the XP CD Recovery console to run chkdsk /r

Glad it helped, Adrian.

Suggest you install your programs slowly to test performance after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into your msconfig>Startup list except AV and gadgets as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU at all times instead of when you want to run them, plus you are giving them a blank check to phone home.

When it is set up, clean and order your HD using state-of-the-art CCleaner "Run Cleaner" and Registry tab, then Auslogics Disk and Registry defragger monthly.

Be sure to save a Win7 Backup image externally after you have it set up as you like, so you never have to reinstall again - just reimage the HD using DVD or Repair CD in 15 minutes.
