Normally the older os (XP) is installed first, then when win 7 is installed it creates the dual boot menu.

Disk error could mean the DVD or HD, was there more information in the error?

Honestly, at this point in time (2010) there is very little to no reason to dual boot anymore, especially when you keep messing up your working OS install. That's on of my biggest complaints about multi-booting, and one reason I avoid it like the plague. You have several good, free virtual machine apps out there, so just load one and install XP.
