    huh?

Ok here is what I've tried. I purchased and installed PD10. Tried the upgrade then? No luck. Then I uninstalled PD10. Cleaned with ccleaner and removed anything in the registry that mentions perfectdisk or raxco. Again:

For these items, make the following changes:
Uninstall these programs. Open Control Panel and search for "uninstall a program".
    PerfectDisk

hmmm...this is really killin me now. I'm befuddled.

after the upgrade completes the compatibility check, a folder is created on your desktop called Compatibility Report -something-. Delete this folder, restart your PC and try again. Have you been restarting between re-attempts ? I suggest you do so.

also look for remnants of the application in c:\program files folder an c:\program fiels\Common Files . Delete any files related to PerfectDisk from the above folders as well.

In addition, I just googled and found out that this app, PerfectDisk, uses a driver called SRESCAN. Open device manager, go to view-show hidden devices , then View-Devices by connection and scroll down to SRESCAN. if you find it anywhere, disable it and try again.

    Hope it helps.

I was able to duplicate your problem and fixed it. Are you absolutely sure you have deleted HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Raxco?

I ran Regshot 2 Unicode before installing and after uninstalling to see what junk was left behind. The undo file it made fixed the problem but the only thing I see in there that may cause it is that key.

Here's the full undo file. I haven't had time to pinpoint what it is if its not the raxco key.

Once in a while, some programs has what is called "Service" installed and when you uninstall it, unless you actually STOP - Kill process, it is still active and THAT totally screws up the install.
several 3rd part program will uninstall and kill are process involved with your "bad program" then suggest a very good Reg cleaner. (I do not like CRAP Cleaner) it simply leaves too much crap.

Windows uninstaller does not REMOVE all the CRAP... hence that is why
TRIAL software will not reinstall so you can continue to test it.
I use Vista Manager for this... there are many good total uninstallers around.

    found it

For some reason the only thing I had on my system was in install directory that the dl had made when I installed the program. After I removed that directory then the install proceeded just fine. Thanks all for you help. Something so simple.

    Problem Persists in Released Code

I'm having the exact same problem with the final code released to MSDN subscribers. This problem is in the final DVD so I would hope it would be solved, but my discussions with tech support at PerfectDisk is not helpful. All of their procedures for removing their program have failed to remove all traces. I'm raging mad at them for not having a proper uninstaller and almost as mad at MS for not having a log (that I can find to date) that shows what they are finding that makes them think something is installed. If I had that log, I could fix the problem!

    Argh...

Did tech support at PerfectDisk offer to send you "PerfectDisk_cleanup.exe" - it is supposed to remove all traces of PD according to the e-mail I got. I never got a chance to use it as I totally re-did the system and PerfectDisk 10 works great for me.

Have you tried the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility?

Yes, I tried their cleanup tool, their posted other things to try on their website along with reporting all of this to the PerfectDisk people who then responded to "really check" that the directories were not there (which they are not).

What the heck is the installer looking for? Why is there no log? Ugh.

OK... This may or may not help you.

I had a similar problem with Roxio Easy Media Creator 10.

This was AFTER doing all the steps Roxio mandated to do a "clean" install - delete folders, registry entries, etc. I ran the MSINSTALLER Cleanup Tool as well. It would still not re-install because the previous install was not uninstalled etc.

Below is the registry entry I finally located that caused the problem. It might give you a clue as to what to look for.

Note that the actual software name is not referenced, The vendor's name (ROXIO) is only referenced in the DATA fields of the Registry. That is where you need to search if you have not already. The vendors name is "RAXCO" in your case. Also note the "Installsource" location reference device "I:" NO LONGER EXISTED at the time I was trying to re-install. But the install location might be a search criteria if you remember where it was originally installed at.

Push comes to shove you may have to scroll through the uninstall registry tree. I use the Registrar Lite (Free version) registry editor from Resplendence.

Good luck and happy hunting! :)
