BUG_USB_DRIVER - RC install

Hi,

Today, 02:29 PM
When my computer reaches the end of the first section of the RC1 (64-bit) install, it doesn't reboot when it says it will. Instead, it sits for a while, and then gives me an error (BSOD) with the error code BUG_USB_DRIVER.

The only USB device I have plugged in is the receiver for my (MIcrosoft) wireless keyboard and mouse.

If I reboot the computer, it continues with the install but gets stuck at the Completing installation stage.

Anybody have any ideas?

My Specs:

Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe
Athlon 64 X2 5200+
4GB Crucial RAM

That's a very strange error indeed, i suppose you don't happen to have a 'cabled' usb keyboard handy do you?

It could be a specific driver issue, which would require you to download & install from the makers website. As this is not an option during install I would suggest looking at Build 7068 won't Install to see if disabling the keyboard device, therefore instating the 'Standard' device might help.

Sorry, what do you mean by disabling the keyboard device? How does one go about doing that?

As it's a Microsoft keyboard and mouse you'd hope it would be supported...

Removing the keyboard in device manager merely caused the keyboard & mouse to stop working...

Something I've remembered, which is probably the cause of my problem, is a quirky bit of my motherboard design. It has a Realtek USB Wireless LAN chip soldered onto the motherboard - obviously I'd forgotten about this being USB, but it is, and it's connected. You can't unplug it, and you can't disable it per se (not through the BIOS anyway), so I don't really know what to do. I've tried running the second section of setup in safe mode and disabling it, but when I reboot it still hangs at the Completing Installation phase.

I'm guessing this is just an unfortunate bug, which I'd like to tell Microsoft about. Anybody know how? And does anyone, on the off chance, have any ideas how to fix it?

i had this problem. i have installed it another way but i am having a problem since i cant make it bootable from windows xp.
Install Windows 7 FAST without a DVD or USB device
this was very easy and very very fast. if you have vista then it should be easy for you. if not then at the bottom of the first page is some info but i have asked the poster to explain it a little more. keep checking the last page for info.

Thank you for the information. However, I followed the instructions, and when I got to the rebooting stage, the "installer" got to the installing devices bit and then got stuck at 62%, which I imagine is exactly the same as happens in the real installer, just I'm seeing it a bit differently.

I still haven't been able to try with a wired keyboard, but I looked in setup's device manager and my keyboard/mouse receiver has been detected properly, so I think it must be my wireless receiver. Annoying bug.
