>> Microsoft writes their Operating Systems with a Hybrid architecture (Windows In Windows, or WoW). This means that most 32 bit programs will work on 64 bit systems.<<
One specific application will not run on 64 bit - Intuit's Quicken Home Inventory. I discovered this AFTER I purchased and downloaded it. Fortunately, Intuit gave me a full refund.
It wouldn't install. Intuit admitted that it's not compatable with 64 bit, and they have no plans to make it so!
Lordbob75...
I bow to your greatness! This is by far the best, most concise, most helpful article on the subject of 32bit vs 64bit that I've had the good fortune to stumble upon.
My son and I are in the process of building a "Killer Gaming Machine", and have only a few pieces left to order. The OS is next. I consider myself to be a fairly experienced PC builder, but last night he asked me the dreaded question "hey dad, what's the difference between 32bit and 64bit?" .... "Well son, it's like this...hey would ya look at the time, gee we should really pick this topic up in the morning when I have more time to fully explain the complexities..."
Unfortunately--me being way too honest--I actually said..."I have no 'F-ing' idea. Why don't you go to bed while I stay up all night trying to find someone on the internet who can explain it to me in a simple, efficient, perfect, relay-able, most-awesome manner. Then, in the morning, you can yank my head up from my desk, wipe the drool from my mouth, and see if I was successful in finding this holy-grail. If, however, I am unsuccessful, feel free to call me a worthless tool, and hang your head in shame. And, of course, I will completely understand when you have decided to love your mother more than you love me.
Seriously, I spent two hours scouring the net for the best explanation. I got bits and pieces that made some sense, but not one, single, understandable article that got right to the core of the issues in objective, practical terms. That is, until yours....
Again, thanks for the article Lordbob75..., and most important...thanks for saving my dignity.
