Clean install with Upgrade Edition?

Hi all,

As you may know, you can purchase Windows Vista Upgrade Edition at half the price of the full version, and do a clean install from a blank system pretty easily - you do a clean install but do not enter the product key, then do a re-install from boot and this time enter your upgrade key - voila, a clean full install of Vista. This is useful for those of us who own a previous version of Windows but want to do a clean install (previous versions of Windows allowed us to insert previous CD to prove ownership but Vista doesn't for some reason).

Does anyone know if this trick will be available for Windows 7? As a genuine owner of Vista, I aim to buy the upgrade edition of Windows 7 but always do clean installs and never 'soft' upgrades so I don't want to have to install Vista first each time.

Thanks

Currently because Windows 7 is in beta, you dont need a CD of a previous version of Windows since Windows 7 is free. When you go to the download page you are also given a product key.

So Im not sure what you gained by installing it twice.

Hi and thanks. Not sure I've explained myself clearly - I have not installed Windows 7 twice - I did that for Vista to allow me to use an upgrade edition to do a clean install.

I understand that Windows 7 is currently free, my question relates to what the options will be when it is released. It may be too early to tell, but I'm interested to know if when Win7 is released, the upgrade edition will be able to be used to install onto a clean system (the same way that Vista upgrade edition was able to, as mentioned).

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it will still work with Win7 Upgrade discs. As you are still not required to put in a product key during install, I don't see how they would be able to block this.
