Yes gregrocker that is what shows on the screen a black screen and the cursor. And I. Got the windows 7 cd from my friend. I downloaded the vista repair file and just need to burn it to a cd. Is that my only option?

How do you plan to activate Win7? Unless your friend provided a valid Product Key, you're better off buying a new copy of Win7 or repairing Vista.

Once you burn the Vista Repair to CD, boot it and run Startup Repair. Report back if this fails.

If you did not burn Recovery Disks for your computer, then you may be able to run the Recovery Partition. You will need to look on first bootup screen for keys to press to Run Recovery, or check your Manual - which can be found on the maker's Support Downloads webpage for your model computer.

What is your computer model? Please fill in your System Specs in bottom left corner of your post.

Ask your buddy exactly what he did with your computer, as this can help fix it.

Now I can't even lauch startup repair it says Windows boot manager it says windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. 1 insert ur windows installation disc and restart ur comp 2 choose ur language and click next 3 click disc and restart ur comp 2 choose ur language and click next 3 click repair ur comp. Then under it it says the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. What should I do?? repair ur comp. Then under it it says the boot selection failed because repair ur comp. Then under it it says the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. Does anyone know how to fix it? I tried going to the bios menu and setting it to factory defualt settings.

Did you try each of these steps:

    gregrocker said:
Check SATA controller setting in BIOS setup: Set to AHCI first, then IDE if necessary.

Remove all but 2gb of RAM to try install, swap RAM, Test your RAM using memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes: Memtest86 - Download Page

Test your HD using maker's full diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.
Are you now booting the Vista Repair CD to attempt repair? The error you are getting is not one you would get if you successfully booted the CD to run Repair. Follow these steps to make sure you are booting CD: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Look on first boot screen for key given to press to Run Recovery. If not there, look in your Manual which you can download at the manufacturer's Support Downloads webpage for your model computer to learn how to run Recovery, then press those keys to try it.

If Recovery will not run from boot, the next thing to attempt is to wipe the HD to remove any possible obstacles to a Win7 clean install.[

Try tapping repeatedly F10 at bootup to see if Factory Recovery is still an option. If so it will restore the laptop to factory condition.

If not, you'll need to use the Vista Repair CD to get Win7 started. Have you created one yet using the link provided earlier, and attempted to boot it? You want to run Startup Repair repeatedly to see if it will start.

Let us know what you are doing.

    Are you booting the CD?

Does it say "Press Any Key to Boot CD/DVD" when you restart with the CD in drive?

After you press a key, does it then show the files loading with a progress bar?

If it doesn't, then you are not booting the Repair CD. Follow these steps:

Boot from CD - How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD - Boot to CD

Vista Repair CD should look simialr to this once it's booted: Repair CD - System Repair Disk

You want to accept any offered Repair. If that fails, you want to choose Startup Repair from the list and run it repeatedly until it starts.
