    HELP!! I changed my BAT file association and can't get it back

    Ok, I did something silly.

    This is windows 7

    I went to

    Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type with a program

    and changed the association to file .BAT to explore.exe (do not ask me, long story).

    Now, when I click on a bat file with the mouse, the whole desktop starts shaking. I think it goes into a loop.

    The problem, when I go back to

    Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type with a program

    The extension .BAT is no longer there! It is gone.

    And when I examine the file property of some .bat file, there is no option to change what to open it with. There is no open with... only OPEN option.

    There is also no way to add a new file extension in Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type. I can't add .bat again.

    I did

    Control panel->Default programs->Set progream access and computer defaults

    but still the .bat file association is broken, and when I double click on it, same thing happens.

    Strange thing, is that initially, the program associated with .BAT was unknown.

    What do I do to get things to the way it was?

    Now when I right click on a .BAT file from exploer, I also do not see the EDIT option any more.

    I think this can be solved with a simple system restore: System Restore
    This should work; post back with any results.

    Found a solution !!

    I forgot about regedit, so I went to regedit, searched for .bat,
    Found it, and found some entries associated, which was telling windows what to do with this file.

    So, I deleted all of these entries,

    Now it is working as before.

    Hope you set a restore point before editing the registry. Watch for unintended consequences.

    The correct solution was to SysRestore as Osholt suggested.

    I am sure you and also Osholt are correct, but i am a newbie, and I do not know even know how to do a sysResotre.

    I made sure I had my fingers crossed when I was deleting those entries in the registry for the .BAT extension.

    I like windows 7 now much more once I found and downloaded explorer++, before that I really was going to go back to XP, because I disliked the file manager that comes with windows 7, but now, I am happy using explorer++. It is so neat.
