Windows 7 upgrade locks up-help please

I have a dell XPS l{ess then 1 year old} quad core Intel processor plenty of memory and all. I am trying to upgrade to win 7. The compability manager says I am fine for the upgrade. During the installation the computer seems to be locked up about 3 quarters of the way through. The progress bar is simply stopped. I started the install about 11:00pm and it's now 5:25am. Should it take this long? This is the 2nd time I have tried this and the same thing has happened both times. The only way to abort it to restart the machine and then of course I will have lost all the vista files and updates. any suggestions? Should I just let it keep going? Calling Dell is a joke of course. Thanks in advance!

Welcome

So surprised that you are having this problem. I have a Dell XPS 420 and I installed Windows 7 without any problems whatsoever. In any event, hopefully this link will provide some information

It is possible one of the useless Dell Utility or boot partitions is blocking the upgrade. I recommend wiping all of these except the Recovery partition which works pretty well on a Dell to restore your computer to factory condition in case you ever want to sell it, service hardware warranty, etc.

Of course if you don't want the Recov partition you can wipe it too, which would allow you to deep clean or wipe the entire HD.

The best tool to wipe entire HD or select partitions is free Partition Wizard bootable CD, or we can give you DISKPART commands to run from Install DVD if you want to wipe entire HD.

I've had this problem on a couple of my machines. Simply clearing the cmos fixed it for me on more than one occasion. Assuming you know how to do this of course. It's just a small button or jumper on the motherboard that needs to be depressed or moved over and back while the system is shut down and unplugged. You may need to go into bios and enable the drives again.
