Hi, wanting to put windows XP on my Windows 7 machine

So I was wanting to put windows XP on my machine that's running windows 7 (was running windows vista before) and when I tried reformatting to put on windows xp from windows vista for some reason it just kept re booting and re booting after I finished the system setup.

Any ideas what I messed up and what exactly do I need to do?
I've reformatted a million times and I have no idea why this time it was messed up.

    Thanks in advance!

Part of that is a little confusing in regards to putting XP on while in Vista? while you have 7 on now. That part conflicts a bit there.

Are you splitting up the main drive on the laptop or have a second drive installed on it? If you are planning an XP/7 dual boot you may want to review the guide for this seen at Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

Since 7 is already your main OS Method #2 is the thing you will want to look over in the guide there.

    Are you booting XP CD?

Boot it and delete the partition you made for it, then create a New one and apply XP full formatting which is slightly different than Vista/Win7.

If it won't see the HD or partitions, then you may need to slipstream your SATA controller drivers into install CD, unless you have a floppy drive to insert them at F6 prompt during driver-loading phase after bootup.

Sorry to confuse you guys and not explain fully. I'm doing this on my desktop computer

I was running windows vista when I tried to install windows xp and I now have windows 7 on it.

I was not planning on dual booting, just having one operating system.

Greg, if the Windows XP disc is the boot disc yes.

Boot the XP CD (Do not start up Win7) then delete all partitions on the Setup screen show above, create a New one, full format and install.

    Back up your data first.

If this fails, you may need to clean your HD first from the Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD command line: Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

Make sure your BIOS is up to date before you delete Win7. Check BIOS version on System Information screen or by running Belarc Advisor, compare to latest version on computer or mobo SUpport Downloads webpage.

    Try resetting the CMOS: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixthe.../clearcmos.htm

If you need to slipstream in the SATA controller driver you will know this because it will not show any partitions or your HD on Setup screen. Use theog's tutorial above.
