Win7 x64 install error: stating "wrong version" on Vista laptop... ?

Thanks for the info Petey7... the version she bought was a single disc student version, and, as far as I can tell, it only has the x64 version on it. Unfortunately, she paid more than $30... quite a bit more. Now that I realize that MS has dropped the price via the Ultimate Steal back down to what it was at the end of last year, I will try to see if she can return it and just purchase it from Digital River (my guess is the univ will not take it back, though).

Not sure why she didn't check the Ultimate site first (or ask me about it), since I had mentioned it to her a few months back when I was trying to procure a copy of Win7 Pro x64 for myself. I ended up using my wife's... erm... "active" student e-mail account to complete the transaction (after I found out from them that they don't actually check up on any .edu transactions). This was back in March when it was up to $69 via the Ultimate Steal, but that was a far cry better than the $135 that the sys builder I bought from wanted for it!

I remember looking under the "Am I Eligible" link before and not finding my school on the list you look at. After reading your post I just typed in my email and it sent it to me. Not sure if I'll actually buy the copy or not. I'll see if my parents want to upgrade their PC to professional and if they do I will buy it for them.

You do not have to reinstall XP to use Win7 Upgrade version: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

The ei.cfg removal utility removes that file from the ISO file, unlocking all versions so you can burn it to DVD or write to flashstick.

gregrocker, that is an interesting article but I don't really need it at this point. I will bookmark it though for future reference. It would be nice to be able to upgrade to Ultimate for no extra cost if I ever need to.

OK, I think I get it... so I can run the util on the iso that I dl'd from Digital River and make a bootable DVD, then use her key during install and load any version she wants... is that correct?

Now, I am guessing that this util will not be of use to me since I already installed Win7 Pro x64 and attached my key to that version. I am guessing that you can't activate a different version of Windows with the same key even if it is on the same computer, is that correct? (During subsequent installs, that is... not making a multi-boot system.)

Correct, I only linked it in case you ended up with another version and needed to unlock your licensed version.

No other version will activate with that key besides your licensed version.
