Trying to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Win 7 Ultimate; I have read a bunch of the threads here... but none seem to apply to me; as I have 493MB free. I even tried increasing the space on my recovery partion by 20 MB in-case that's where Win 7 was trying to instal... nothing.
Everything I tweak/deactivate/prepare still leaves me with the error message of "Not enough diskspace." -Sigh.

I passed the Windows 7 upgrade advisor.
As far as I am aware you need at least 16GB of space to install windows 7 32 or 64 bit, you have nowhere near enough room to install it if you only have 493 MB or did you mean 493 GB?

If I were you, I would not do an upgrade. Upgrade usually give headaches as devices that stop working because of Incompatible between operational systems. The same applies to some applications and software. Without counting error messages as reported by you.

Could I use Acronis to create a partion and move my personal folder there, do a clean Win 7 install on my main partition and then import my personal folder into Win 7 afterwards?
I can redownload/re-install all my software, I have no problem with that. But I have too much iPhone/Movies/Music to just erase them.
Drag your active User files to external HD or DVD, then clean your HD before installing Win7: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation
If you can't do this, then go ahead and format a data partiition on the right side of your HD by shrinking Win7, then creating and formatting partition. Drag your User files into it.
Partition or Volume - Shrink
Partition or Volume - Create New
Then when you boot the Win7 DVD, use Custom>Drive options to delete, create and format the first OS partition to install upon. As long as you don't touch the second data partition, your data will be safe.
