Problems setting up an extender (Xbox 360)

Sorry if something has been posted already like this; I did a quick search and couldn't find anything to solve my particular problems.

First, I'm using RC1 7100. My router is a Belkin Wireless G router. My PC is connected wirelessly to the network. The Xbox is connected via ethernet. I have Windows Firewall completely off and no other firewall installed. In the network map, I can see the Xbox 360.

When I first attempted to add the Xbox as an extender, WMC didn't recognize it on its own. I then performed the "add an extender" option with the 8 digit code. The little circle appears and spins in the middle of the screen, but when it reaches the "Configuring your extender" stage, it stops spinning and my PC locks up. The Xbox has "Downloading" on the screen at this point. The PC doesn't respond to ctrl-alt-del or alt-f4. I left the computer at this stage for about 30 minutes. After shutting it down, WMC now shows the extender but says it needs to be configured. I type in the code and I get the following error message: "Configuration Error: An error was encountered while configuring yoru computer for use with this Extender."

I did a system restore to June 4th and tried the setup again, just to see if it was just a random bug. Same thing happened again, though this time I let it go for an hour.

Any suggestions?

I had this problem and I found a fix. It seems like it freezes up when windows tries to install the extender driver. What I did was got back to where it would freeze but before i put in the number i disconnected from the internet and tried it and it worked. Not exactly sure why it worked or if it was a coincident but it might have been because windows was trying to download the driver and crashed because of it. If you need to get back to the point where it will freeze try a system restore. Hope this helps.

I experienced this same problem, and the following fixed it for me (please note am running Windows 7). Essentially, you need to enable media sharing. Go to Control Panel. Select Network and Internet. Select Network Sharing Center. Select Choose Homegroup and Sharing Options. Under the heading 'Share media with devices', go into 'Choose media sharing options'. Locate your xbox 360 in the box and ensure that sharing is 'Allowed'. If it isn't (for some reason mine had become 'Blocked'), change this to 'Allowed'. Click OK. Tick 'Stream my pictures, music, and videos to all devices on my network' just to be sure. Save changes. Re-try the extender connection process.

I have a similar problem trying to connect Windows 7 Home Premium retail version to my Xbox extender. The Xbox is new this past Christmas and the PC is about a year old with a new Windows 7 install yesterday.

I tried to set up Media Center and it failed everytime, says my extender cannot connect with my PC. I went into my firewall settings, and noticed that Media Center Extenders was not checked on allowed programs. Everytime I checked it, clicked OK, and tried again, same error, and I noticed that it unchecked my Media Center Extenders firewall setting once again. So I went a step further and shut down my windows firewall, and my router firewall, still same error fails to communicate with my PC. I also tried both allowing and disallowing Multicast on my router, all to no avail.

@peroxide99: Under 'Choose media sharing options', I don't see the Xbox as one of the devices. With Show devices on: 'Local network' , the only thing I see (not really a "device") is 'Media programs on this PC and remote connections...'. When 'All networks' is selected, it adds the name of my PC, but that is all. The Xbox is not shown. The Xbox itself is attached to the router and it can see and download games from the Internet, but I don't see it listed on my PC.

Hi all, this is my first post but having found a solution to this needed to make sure as many people as possible found a cure, because this is very frustrating.

Basically I tried several things, but the only thing that worked was the solution found at the following URL :-

It seems that the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) on Windows 7 is auto tuning, which can cause problems.

For reference I searched the internet for a solution to this issue and trie many things, what I did find is that I made sure SSDP, uPNP Device Host and Windows Media Player Network Sharing service was running under services (You can go to services by typing services.msc in search (Win key + R)

Another way to check if you have connectivity to your XBOX from your PC is to ping the XBOX, now ordinarily you cant ping the XBOX by default, but whilst trying to get this working found that the XBOX is pingable when searching for a PC connection, just search for a PC connection from your XBOX and leave this window up, even if it finds nothing. The on your PC just ping the IP address for the XBOX, you can get this address by checking the Network settings on the XBOX.

Another tip is to connect the XBOX directly to your PC, a straight or cross over cable will work, then try the Media Center setup, this might not work again due to the MTU size issue.

Hardwire your computer/laptop, and make your xboxwireless or hardwired... Keep your xbox on the "code" screen eg. 0355-6191 and try it that way. I just had to use my ethernet cable for me to do this after a week of trying (again)..

hope I have helped and dont change anything, when it says your firewall is blocking it. It just means that your not on the same connection as your xbox
