Here is the solution that worked.
The xbox and the MCE machine can communicate and 'see' each other fine when they are out of the domain.
As soon as the MCE machine joins the domain then it stops 'connecting'. Xbox seems to cycle through ready and unavailable and never quite gets to load MCE.
Because MS is using a big piece of Remote Desktop to drive this, and because the xbox (and other extenders) don't have a big operating system, there is quite a bit of stuff that happens in the Link layer.
Short story is there is a problem with the Network Mapping and Responder modules.
Because Network Mapping can be a hungry process, especially in a larger network,Windows 7 has been changed so that the default, when in a network, is to switch these off.
    To switch back on -
'Run' gpedit.msc to open the Local Group Policy Editor.(The Local Group Policy Editor is available on computers running the Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition of Windows 7.These are also the only editions that can join a domain.)
Navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Link-Layer Topology Discovery.
Double-click the Mapper I/O Driver policy.
Select Enabled, and then select Allow Operation While In Domain.
    Click Next.
Repeat the selections for the Responder Driver policy setting, and then click OK.
By the way, you would do the same to get full network mapping to work in Network & Sharing Center.
Also, this solution can be 'tested' by reversing the fix and viola, problem's back.

Lol ok i went through every page and everyones help got nothing , but i managed to fix it my self

so if you know your networks good and the xbox 360 is in the network map try this

start up pc & xbox 360 connect both to internet as you would
next on your 360 go to network settings then test PC connection now what should happen is the 360 should find the pc i,e craigs-pc , select this and go to video library then click your pc name i.e craigs-pc and you should find any folders you have set to share on your pc no need to use windows media center at all.

and if it dont work trust me go back and check all your settings on the pc 1st thing to check is the network map .Also if you cant find a certain folder on the xbox thats on your pc just right click the folder on your pc and select share , restart the xbox if it dont appear within a few seconds ....any questions just ask hope it helps i know the nightmare setting it up

Nothing mentioned here worked for me. My problem was the 360 could not see windows 7, but the PC could see the 360. I turned off the 360 and restarted my router, then i opened WMP12 and clicked Stream > More streaming options from the library mode, then hovered the mouse over my Xbox and clicked on Remove. Then clicked on "Choose homegroup and sharing options" at the bottom and then selected "Leave homegroup" at the bottom, once again. Now I clicked create new homegroup and selected the files to share. Made sure all the other settings within advanced sharing mentioned here were allowed except password. restarted xbox and navigated to > My Xbox > Video Library, and it appeared straight away for me. Hope this helps.

What TUl2BO wrote below worked perfect for me! Thanks! I just bought the new Xbox 360 with the internal wifi and had all the same problems I had with my old Xbox 360 with the Windows Media Center. That function is just plain crap I think. Setting it up this way to just share to the Video Library worked flawlessly! Finally.... an end to the frustration! :)

    Hi
I have tried several things to connect the xbox to my pc. i have the wi fi network adapter on the xbox (not sure if that is the problem) which works fine with xbox live, however xbox does not detect the PC. I have not tried to connect the console to the pc using the cable though.

I have tried connecting my pc to the xbox using the windows media center extender, which allows me to input the 8 digit key, but it always fails at the third step and says configuration error (i don't remember the complete error). any thoughts?

the problem I have is that my computer sees the xbox on the network no problem, but the xbox does not see the pc.

have checked all the services are running such as SSDP discovery and UPnP Device host as well as the Media Player Networking Sharing Service.

under share media with devices this is checked and the device allow list includes the xbox.

Have noticed that if i restart the Media Player Networking Sharing Serivce through services.msc the xbox then sees the pc it pops up immediately on the xbox, but then as soon as i restart the pc its back to not being available??

anybody some ideas what can be done to fix this?

Hi I worked through this tread and nothing worked !!!!
Just as a last ditched attempt fitted a new Cat 5 cables the first from the PC to the Hub & the second from the Hub to the Xbox and it all worked
The weird thing was that with the old Cat 5 cable I was still able to surf the net and even watch clips from youtube.
Hope this is of help and will save someone hours and hours of time.!!!!

I've only just got the extender working on my 360 today but the menu is terribly slow!

Films play with no problem at all but to navigate is a challenge, I've tried disabling animations and sounds but that made no difference.

None of these solutions seem to be working for me, and I am fairly certain that I am implementing them correctly.

Xbox and PC do recognize each other and I can access the libraries on my computer via xbox.

I have setup the Windows Media Center on my Xbox.

WMC on my computer shows the Xbox is setup as an Extender. It also states that it is ready for use.

    My problem is as follows:

Every time I try to run WMC on my Xbox it enters the black screen that says Windows Media Center and has the load "bubbles" underneath with the word Contacting... after a period the screen times out and gives me the message:

    "Connection Failure

The Xbox could not connect to the Windows Media Player PC. Turn the console off and and back on again, and try again."

..believe me when I say this does not work.

I have tried and tried to solve this to no avail.

PLEASE HELP.. someone must know what the problem is??
