For some reason I can't get either the x86 or x64 7000 build to play a dvd in either media center or media player

I tried adding another dvd player and it won't play the dvd either.
I tried winamp, it did't work.
I tried KLite Mega codec pac and media player classic without a result.
I look at the video_ts folder, the vob files are associated to windows live photo gallery?
And the IFO and BUP files have no associations.
Any one have any ideas what I may be mucking up here??

You can have a look at default programs in the start menu to see if media player has all its defaults and if not turn them all on and see if that helps.
you might also try changing the default program that opens your movie files and try to see if any other sort of media is affected like AVI.

avis' work fine. any movies on my hard drive work except video_ts folders.
I went to default programs and found about a third of wmp associations were unchecked, so I checked them all.
The dvd i was using was serenity, (store bought). when I looked at it in my computer it had udf in grey below the disk name. I now have Ghoste in the shell in and saw no such designation. Gits also plays now but with only hisses and pops from the speakers.
Also in looking at the files in video_ts folder, still aren't associated, and the vob files are still with windows live photo gallery??Last edited by MrUnderhill; 09 Jan 2009 at 07:07. Reason: more info

I'm having the same problem. It seems that Windows just isn't reading the DVD properly, not any problem with the programs that play it back. I've tried VLC, GOM, Windows Media Player and Media Center and none of them have worked. It just shows the name of the disc and that it uses a UDF file system at the bottom of the screen. I've tried three store-bought discs so far without any luck.
The other programs just froze, but I got this error with VLC:
Playback failure:
VLC cannot set the DVD's title. It possibly cannot decrypt the entire disk.

It took quite a lot of throwing around before I finally got it right.
I followed Mr Grims advice which helped. But eventually I went through and updated my sysboard drivers, graphics card drivers, and sound card drivers. with their respective manufacturers latest and greatest driver packages. I also went to codeckpack.com and downloaded codeck pack 6030 all in one and added installed that, then it finally went right for me.
The drivers that come with 7 are good, (Much better than what the early support for Vista.), but they are still largly only basic drivers, and sometimes not complete enough to work especially with media center and media player.
Also you need a decoder for media player. I use a Nvidea graphics card and was able to get purevideo and use that, but there are others available, some free-some not.

The Nvidia Purevideo trial assumes I bought my video card using a credit card and that I have some confirmation number that came with the package. Unfortunately for me, this doesn't apply in my case as I'm using a spare old Nvidia card my brother had after my last one overheated and fried itself.
VLC has it's own built-in DVD mpeg2 decoder though, so this shouldn't really be happening. I've installed a few codec packs and they do nothing to fix the problem. I'll just wait it out, and try to see if there's anything I can do.

It's a Pioneer DVR-111D. I just updated the firmware to their most recent release and it still won't play. I'll try to find another drive to use and see if that will work.

Still using the Pioneer. Media Center now gives me "Video Error. Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer."
VLC now gives me this.

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://D:\'. Check the log for details.
I'm starting to think I should just buy a decoder when I switch drives.
