I have a similar remote which I don't use often either. Are there any other uses for those infrared receiver ports?

No. HP laptops use IrDA only to receive remote control signals. It only works one way thus making other use impossible (i.e. communicate with a mobile phone or another computer with IrDA).

All Intel based HP laptops can use the same ENE CIR driver packet for IrDA, sp41645.exe. It is a Vista driver but works perfectly with Win7, both x86 and x64 versions.
