Handbrake, AC3 Passthru vs. AC3 (ffmpeg) 6 channel discrete. Which is better for say Streaming to a PS3, Windows 7 pc's and a Blu ray player? I am using Handbrake and I am using a mp4 file, I would love to use mkv and dts but alas the ps3 doesn't recognize it.

DTS can be problematic in all kinds of players and devices. It's just not getting the kind of support it should have.
Passthru is the highest compatibility if that is your question though.

...really I had no such problems myself, but unlike you I have since switched to mkv.

Aften AC3 is the better option over ffmpeg if recoding the original audio to AC3, ProLogic2, or lower bitrate 5.1 (I/E 448 5.1)
Using the original audio stream would be the best, unless you want to save some space.

MKV is also the better container, for sure.
Although AC3 will work in MP4, it isnt officially supported. MKV will be less problematic.

Another option may be to try TS or MT2S container, if its more compatable with the PS3.

well i guess windows media center doesn't support .mp4, lol, can't get it to play. Found it out it is on purpose, Microsoft doesn't allow you to play it so i will go back to my first formats without passthrough.
