for years I've been using K-Lite Codec Pack, plays everything I throw at it.

K-Lite Codec Pack and vlan plays every file for me from video to audio even .flv
I am also using k-lite for some years. But the recent versions cannot play(in windows 7. not sure about in xp or vista) some of my flv files but those files runs perfectly on vlc player.

So I tried the shark007`s codec pack. After installing it I can play those video in WMP without any problem..

I don't understand. What does Windows 7 not play natively?

I use VLC media player - Open Source Multimedia Framework and Player. It can play almost anything in this world. Never needed a codec pack or anything.

Get the Shark007 codec pack + Media Player Classic Home Cinema x64. Perfect combo IMO.
I've been using MPC Home Cinema like forever. It plays everything I though at it. I would only need a codec pack to enable MKV and other formats' thumbnails in windows 7 64 bit's explorer. in 32 bit windows I could do it installing splitters and hacking the reg, but in 64bit nothing has worked for me. does Shark007 codec pack enable thumbnail preview in windows 7 64bit explorer?

    I use ffdshow tryouts.

This isnt really a "codec pack", its one directshow codec which uses the ffmpeg library to play almost every audio/video format imaginable.
Its superior to any codec pack in that it doesnt install a whole bunch of crap on your pc that ends up screwing up other things.

I vote K-lite full hands down. Everything just works, and it is not packed full of crap. They are carefully hand-selected for compatibility and performance.

tryouts is also good, but you have to combo it with like MPC to get full support of major encodes of videos.

I also am a fan of K-lite. I like the way they keep releasing updates that keep all the codecs, ffdshow and MPC-HC up to date. So all I have to do is keep installing K-lite's frequent updates and I'm set with the latest versions of everything I need.

The only thing I've done lately is change the K-lite installation defaults to use AC3 Filter wherever possible. I feel I get superior sound (for video files) that way.

For playing audio files, I use F2k and am pretty happy with the quality I get out of that.

For codec it depends on what you do. if you just want to watch movies then VLC and GOM players will not need much codecs, but for RMVB, GOM will will need the realplater alternative package that includes the requierd codecs, once installed even medial player can play RMVB files too.

if you want to do encoding then you may need other codecs as well such as DIVX or XVID but that also depends on the type of encoding software you use, ususlly if it's an expensive package it will not need any additional codecs, but the cheap ones like EO Video will require you to install some additional codecs like DIVX or XVID if you want to encode with that format.
