Recording-editing live TV - file incompatibility

Windows Live TV recorded file has an extension .wtv. To edit-burn it one must use Live Movie Maker (thanks to Microsoft) producing a file with .wcmp extension which it can burn to DVD. Better editing programs like Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 can not open either files. Live Movie Maker is good for editing out advertisements, but not much more for any decent editing work.
File conversion progs are offered (some with hefty prices) on the net, but, as far as I can see, none can do a decent, clean conversion of .wtv to AVI or MPEG2. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Right click on the WTV file and chose Convert to dvr-ms. That format can be handled by most converters/editors.
