Using laptop as extender

I currently have a USB 3.0 port and a 3.0 USB drive. If I use an old USB extender to connect the two will it still carry the signal at 3.0 speed or will it carry it at whatever speed the extender is. The extender is just a basic one.

When I tried after entering the 8 diget code, it said it couldnt connect to it or something, and that I needed to enable multicasting on my router. How do I do that or is there a way to bypass this?

I have a D-Link DSM750; works great on Vista. When I run under W7, all is fine and I hear the sound of the extender connecting. As soon as it connects, the tv screen goes solid blue....sounds are there, but cant see anything. Works fine on PC screen.
