simple..right click the wtv file and select the context menu convert to dvr-ms..viola...a converted file...you can even use a batch file/scheduler to keep your folder converted and organized..

bat file goes something like this

    move "e:\Recorded TV\*.wtv" e:\toconvert\
    c:\windows\ehome\WTVconverter.exe "e:\toconvert\*.wtv"
    move "e:\toconvert\*.dvr-ms" "e:\converted\"
    pause
    Del e:\toconvert\*.wtv

modify it to suit your needs..use this in conjunction with a program like life extender or mce buddy and your all set

Would it be possible to get the files from Win7 that let you convert wtv to dvr-ms, and copy them to vista? I've got Vista with the tvpack installed, and can convert wtv to dvr-ms using TODVRMS, but there are a few files it won't work on. I'm trying to find another way to convert these. Thanks.

I just want to let you know VSO software ( author of ConvertXtoDVD ), as added a command line GUI too for WTV support ( for 7 only but they seem to work on vista WTV support too ) :

You can download it from their forum

    .wtv to mpeg2 conversion

I'm certainly a greenhorn and am confused on how to convert .wtv to mpeg2. First of all, I am looking for something to take the HUGE files recorded/created by Windows 7 RC Live TV recording (.wtv), strip (or skip) commercials and result in a smaller file for storage and later viewing. I've downloaded dmrtoolbox and SUPER, looked at the former, tried the latter and still don't know if I can do it. In the SUPER menu, I see there are profiles that can be imported but none that does .wtv to mpeg2 unless it is not obvious. Does anyone have a profile for that? Or point me to a place where I can get some hints? BTW, tried NERO but it is very tedious to do manually - never get one done with out goofing it up.

    Help appreciated. Tahnks in advance.

Windows 7 is using the .wtv file format for recorded TV.
Does anybody know (preferably free) tools to convert these files to for example .avi ?
In the past I used the dvr-ms converter, however this is not a free tool... and I hate to have to pay again for a new tool

The tool is right in Windows 7 for free. Just righy clicck on the file and it will ask you if you want to convert it.
