Problems viewing video in media player

OK, I am ok with changing the bios settings. The laptop is not connected to an external monitor so there are no connections to be moved unless you mean internally?

Doesn't look like the bios will give me the option to choose which graphics device to initialize first. In fact, the video card doesn't even show up in the bios device list. There are options to enable or disable certain things but the only thing that looked vaguely like it mightbe relevant was "integrated NIC". What's more, when I ran dxdiag in windows it showed the Intel HD display as being the video adapter. Very tedious.

The only thing that's worked for me so far is disabling the nvidia card in device manager and rebooting. The dvd then played fine in windows media player using intel hd graphics. Still not entirely sure how to fix the conflict between the two devices but at least I can watch deep space nine now

OK, a member on the nvidia forums suggested the following solution.

i) Create a copy of the .exe of whichever video player you want to use, and give it a suitable name.

ii) Open the nvidia control panel, go to manage 3d settings, add the new .exe file and set the default graphics processor for that to the nvidia card. I am going to test this tonight and will post back the result.

Well, it kind of worked.

I managed to get wmp to play a dvd this way using the nvidia device. However, the image gets disrupted every few seconds rendering it completely unwatchable, this is the same for any video. I guess I'll just have to resign myself to a buggy system.
