I use TVersity and can watch pretty much anything via my xbox360 as a media center. MKV's are no problem, but the xbox does not play that format natively so TVersity transcodes it on the fly, therefore you'll need good CPU performance to keep up. If not you can dumb down the resolution via the TVersity settings and play the files at a quality in which your computer can keep up with but then you're missing out on HD, and who would want to do that!

As a reference, when I used to have a dual core, it wasn't enough to transcode into full 1080P but with my current specs, I now can.

Divx is working on this, and there is a technical preview of the functionality available for download: DivX Tech Preview: MKV on Windows 7 | DivX Labs - Everywhere Communication Occurs Community Happens

I have not tested it yet, and you have to register to be able to download, but it's free.
