WMP - Cannot play that file

Have used WMP to play MP4 files since I got this computer.
Suddenly I am getting the message which is attached as a capture.

Can anyone throw light on this?
I went to the webpage but it was not helpful.

You may have an issue with missing codecs
Have you installed any codec packs ie CCCP or K-Lite codec pack ? they normally sort most playback issues

    Hi Pauly,

No, haven't done anything such as the installations you mention. To be honest, I don't know what those terms refer to.
    Where would I find them?
Are they available as d/loads from Microsoft?

codecs are files that are used to code and decode audio and video information, the two i mention above are the two most popular i believe, try installing one and it should help playback of *most* files including HD stuff

    Thanks again.
Went to MS to d/load codex and validation was required.
Then I got the message attached.
Good old MS ... keeping up to date!
Of course I can't move from this page ... this is where I keep being taken so not sure how MS expects me to d/load latest version if they won't provide it. :)

Anyway since that failed I'm checking other sources for the d/load.

    Thx Pauly,

I managed to d/load a codex from MS site ... ran it ... rebooted but still the WMP wouldn't operate.

Then I received yr last post with the link ... d/loaded the CCCP, ran it and hey presto ... WMP worked ... plus I have a new option of the CCCP media player! a good outcome.
