Folder for "Videos" library won't work on same drive as "Recorded TV"

    Interesting discovery. W7 Pro x64.

I was copying content from my desktop PC to my laptop in anticipation of an upcoming weekend trip. The content consists of both (a) entire recent copy-freely WTV recordings, and (b) MPEG videos (actually previously edited from copy-freely WTV recordings using VideoReDo with underlying MPEG-2/TS codec).

Because of my laptop's hard drive partitioning arrangement I had created two "\Recorded TV" and "\Trimmed TV Clips" folders on the same single drive letter (J) which had lots of free space. The drive had previously been specified for WMC on the laptop as where new TV recordings go (although I don't have a TV tuner in the laptop), so the "Recorded TV" library already showed "J:\" and obviously WMC is only looking in the J:\Recorded TV folder.

I also already had two other "\Trimmed TV Clips" folders defined on two other drives (other than J) making up my "Videos" library. So when I added this third J:\Trimmed TV Clips folder I also added it to my "Videos" library, fully expecting it to show up in WMC when browsing "Videos" (in Pictures and Videos).

Well, surprisingly, although this third videos folder on J DID show up as part of the "Videos" library using several different GUI presentations designed to show libraries, its name and content did NOT show up in WMC itself when browsing "Videos"!! Huh??

No matter what I double-checked and examined, it sure looked like everything I'd done was correct, and that there should have been THREE separate "Trimmed TV Clips" folders appearing in WMC when I browsed "Videos". And yet, there were only TWO. This new third folder (which was located on the same drive J which had been specified as the target for the "Recorded TV" library. Not having a TV tuner on the laptop I'd never set up WMC for an actual "new recording folder", but had defined J as part of the "Recorded TV" library so that the J:\Recorded TV folder contents would appear when I browsed "Recorded TV" with WMC.

So... why didn't the new third "Trimmed TV Clips" folder on J appear in WMC when browsing "Videos" (i.e. the "Videos" media library)?

Well, I finally decided it was because the J drive was also specified in the "Recorded TV" media library configuration! Since the entire J drive had been "consumed" as part of the "Recorded TV" media library, apparently it was not possible to also have an arbitrary folder on that same drive be specified as part of the "Videos" (and probably others as well) media library!

Sure enough, when I relocated the \Recorded TV folder from J to D (on which there was no other "Trimmed TV Clips" folder) and reconfigured the media libraries through WMC so that D (and not J) was now the drive specified for "Recorded TV", like magic the third "Trimmed TV Clips" on J now DID appear in the WMC browse of "Videos"!!

I'd not ever run into this conflict before, as the hard drives and partitions on my desktop just didn't produce this same situation as I'd run into on my laptop which has only one hard drive which is also relatively small.

But for the future, I will now know that you CANNOT put a "Videos" media library folder on the same drive as is also specified as part of the "Recorded TV" media library, and expect to see the contents of that "Videos" media library folder using WMC when browsing "Videos"... if you want to use WMC (rather than WMP or any other media player) to be able to see and play videos in that folder.

    Just sharing this new discovery.
