First, can you manually close Firefox, so it's not running...and try again...
Also can you install Malwarebytes:
Malwarebytes.org
update it, boot to safe mode, and run a full scan of all files.
Does file deletion require moving the file from one partition or drive to another, ie, from D:\*** to C:\$Recycle.Bin ?
Please also eject any disks in your CD or DVD drives, and unplug/stop/remove any usb, thumb, or flash drives.
Do you have any network mapped drives to your network on your PC?
Also, what happens if you increase the size of the recycle bin to a size larger than the files to be deleted, with the recycle bin being emptied prior to file deletion.
When Vista first came out, slow file moves (across a network) were experienced on some hardware setups, but I have not heard of anything like that with W7, and subsequent hotfixes and service packs seemed to alleviate the issue.
Are you positive you have the proper inf files installed for you chipset?
I also have used Auslogics Disk Defrag which is highly recommended, and free for home users, defrag utility that works better than the basic one provided in windows.
